Is there a sealer to use...

Recommended Posts

If the prep is handled properly and good quality products are used, there should be no need for a sealer.

Heard of folks spraying Frog Juice on a finished sign... can't vouch for it though.

I did a canvas for my personal use in my Dallas Cowboys room and some of the letters lifted. So i decided to seal it out with that stuff and it has stayed..

We use MDO boards on alot of signs, after a good base coat of paint and applying the vinyl we have never had a need to do anything else, some of our signs have lasted up to 7 to 8 years outside year around before showing any signs of wear or fading.

How long after painting wood do you need to wait before applying vinyl?

QUOTE> "... some of the letters lifted."

'sealing out'  isn't effecting the actual problem... you have adhesion issues between the canvas and vinyl.

the vinyl isn't bonded to the (primed & painted?) canvas.

I still say, with proper prep and good products, not sealer is needed.

Would just be another variable and area for problems.

The proper paints and vinyls seal themselves.

I have always gone with the nose check for gassing.

If there is no longer a paint odor, the paint is cured enough for vinyl.

There are a number of exceptions, though.

I'm thinking the only signs I had a problem with were the ones I didn't use an acrylic paint as base.... I also noticed if I seal the wood with a mod podge or laquer it adheres better...

No, it's not okay. 631 is made for indoor use...  Use at least Oracal 651.

Can I also ask a quick question about vinyl decals for wall adhering??? The oracle 631 is what I use for that as well... I haven't found a great transfer paper for this... All wants to hold onto the vinyl ... I've tried HT55 and GXF 100 .... I hope I labeled those right.... But those are what I'm reading are the good transfer tapes and they suck for me... Is it because some have had a gloss finish and others matte???

The finish (sheen) of the vinyl can definately effect how well the transfer tape works.

The matte sheen needs a stickier tape.

Ok that's what I've been reading.... I've been a wonderful help thank you... I've noticed the paper tapes are so much easier to work with instead of the clear ones... Unless your using them for a car window type decal....

Most folks on here prefer the paper tapes.

Honestly, I would use 651 on all MDO signage... regardless of wether indoors or out.

I prime MDO with   post-43059-0-17085500-1399231709_thumb.j

and finish with   post-43059-0-88100200-1399231715_thumb.j

Does not need any sealers past that.
