Cal 393 Posted April 11, 2014 Good morning folks, I tried to download a couple items from BOTW last night and couldn't do it, hope you can help me. When I hit the download button, a pop-up comes on and says it cannot convert the xxx.ai.ps file. I've not had any problems before. Using a Mac with AI6 Thanks, Cal
Wildgoose 4,200 Posted April 11, 2014 Try using finder and change the file name by dropping off the .ps at the end. Sometimes that makes a difference. PM me the file if you want and I'll mess with it.
Cal 393 Posted April 11, 2014 Thanks WildGoose, be this evening before I can look at it again, Cal
Cal 393 Posted April 12, 2014 WildGoose, followed your directions and was able to rename and save it as an ai file. Thanks a bunch! Cal
Vermonster 111 Posted April 12, 2014 word to the wise - in case you didn't know. Check anything you get there in wireframe mode if you're cutting in vinyl....
pshawny 410 Posted April 12, 2014 Sounds like you got it fixed. Sometimes BOTW files might be created in a newer version of AI than what you have and won't open.
Cal 393 Posted April 12, 2014 Thanks fellas. Vermonster, I am not familiar with "wireframe mode". I am cutting in vinyl. What is wireframe, and what is it showing me? Thanks, Cal
Wildgoose 4,200 Posted April 12, 2014 Cal what he is talking about is a view mode in illustrator. in the view menu it will have am option to look at your file in Preview or Outline and in outline mode it will show you what the cutter is seeing. Often designs made for print are not set up all the way to cut. If they have stroked lines they will look fine in preview mode but everything will be off when you go to cut them. Also often they are built with a bunch if clipping paths that are in there to facilitate gradient fills and all those need to be cleaned out of there. Looking at the file in Outline mode will help you see if there are these type of issues. Very regularly the BOTW files are messy in these regards but they are still faster to use than recreating the whole vector again. (usually)
Vermonster 111 Posted April 12, 2014 Ya...what he said. Lol Good explanation! That goes for any vector you've never cut before... saves you time and vinyl...trust me!
Cal 393 Posted April 12, 2014 OK, I am familiar with the outline view. Just hadn't heard it referred to as wireframe before. Thanks again guys. Cal
xpaperman 719 Posted April 13, 2014 word to the wise - in case you didn't know. Check anything you get there in wireframe mode if you're cutting in vinyl.... I discovered this the hard way! I now check every file I get before cutting for the first time. I then have a special place on my hard drive to put files that I have actually cut and know are good that have my approval!
