My USB cable no longer works, so I got a Rs232 adapter and tried that, still my sign cut will not send anything to the cutter.

I tried a printer cable also, nothing.   at first, if I moved the cable, it would finally connect.

So I am thinking the board is no good.

Is it a hard job to replace?

thanks.

According to tech support,  You need a Keyspan Adapter,(that is the brand name) or a Belkin adapter.   Not just any ol' cable will work.  This from a previous tech support message  Or if you have a serial card in your computer. Use a serial cable.

The issue could be a number of different things, likely static related if it's just stopping in the middle of cuts. The USB to serial adapter wont resolve the static issues but it can help to mitigate them since a serial connection is harder to interrupt. First, if your cutter is a first generation MH (mk1) it will need to have a Null Modem serial cable coming from the cutter to the adapter. Second, most radio shack USB to Serial adapters will not work... Or Staples or Office Depot for that matter. That's why we only carry the Keyspan USB to serial adapter. It's the only one that we can say for sure will work as it should every time and we've tested it thoroughly.  Another solid USB to serial adapter is a Belkin- but in either case you have to have a Null Modem serial cable for either to work. Banner John is correct in that a serial connection is given COM 1 by default, however, if you're using a USB to serial adapter it will likely get a regular COM port number in the device manager. If none of this helps, be sure to call in to the support department and speak with Mike Northman. 425-902-1302

I bought a keyspan and the cable I had here was the wrong one.  female to femae, so I took the board out of the cutter.  4 cold solders for the USB input.

Heated them up and it works again.  will buy a null modem cable as I think the USB connection is weak.

thanks.

Glad to hear you got it working - had a bunch of cold solder joints on our first projection tv back in the day - it quit during christmas time and the service center said see you in 3 weeks,  read they had a problem with cold solder joints and had 2 yrs of tv repair training under my belt to spent part of a day pulling the board out enough to solder several suspect joints and then used it for about 10 yrs until it had another problem and was no longer worth using.

It pays to be handy and you saved yourself a lot of time and headaches by digging in - the spirit we love around here

How do you know if a solder joint is "cold" or not? I'm thinking that's what is wrong with my MH871 Cutter but I have no soldering experience.

Wiggle the piece or what you can, if the solder moves it is a cold joint. Happens more on board contact points than pins.

I've had to repair the usb connector 2 times on my 1351. Got it without checking and found it was weak and the 2nd time my wife tripped over the cable breaking the connector. So an old Dell monitor donated a usb connector. Still haven't been able to get serial to work though.
