cmwyke 0 Posted March 5, 2011 I understand that everyone says to use translucent vinyl on a lighted sign, but what are the problems with using Oracal 651?
godstrong1 2 Posted April 14, 2011 i was wondering the same thing! they both glow when light is on.anyone know whats the difference?
midwaste 4 Posted April 14, 2011 Get a piece of transparent 8300 or something similar and hold it up to the light and compare to 651 and you'll see the difference. I'm not saying 651 is unsuitable for a backlit application, but it's quite different that 8300. The biggest thing I think is that most backlit signs are going to have a layer of paint between them and the vinyl, which is going to further cut down on the light shining through. I just did my first backpainted sign this week and used 8300. It's not that much more expensive and it adds a nice look.
