Can't get USB to Serial adapter to work

I am trying to find a permanent solution to my hit or miss USB connection.

I purchased a USB to Serial adapter at Best Buy.  I have loaded the drivers for the adapter.

When I go to setup the cutter, I see the USB to Serial Com listed, when I select it and hit cut, I get the error "Cannot open the open the output device..."

I have searched the other threads, but didn't see anyone have a specific problem with the adapter itself.

You must be using a laptop. If not, get a true serial pci card and install it. I've seen them on Ebay for like $7.

I am on a laptop, and yes, the Dynex 16" cable.

After playing around with a few things, I no longer get the error from SBE, it looks like it is sending the data to the cutter but I get no response from the cutter.

Any chance the serial port on the cutter is not working?

My laptop is recognizing the usb to serial converter, as displayed in the device manager and I have verified all the settings to be the same.

Check that you have the right port selected.
