Received my 3rd cutter and still problems

Recommended Posts

Seems ODD.

My MH 871 has cut some very slight jagged lines at times that I noticed while weeding, but not everything. (IF it gets to be a problem I will be calling uscutter for a Fix)

I figured it was the nature of the cheap beast and thats the Difference in buying one of these over buying say a Roland ?

But you have had 3, PLUS another unit from someone sent to you that  he says cuts Fine, now does not once you get it?

Somethings not right with your electrical or computer or just plain user error. (settings)

NO offence meant at all, it's just strange, I know i'd be PISSED off to no end if this was happening to me and my cutter thats for sure.

Hope you figure it out soon, I was hoping it was an easy fix in case mine got worse, so far mine is just intermitant and no where near as bad as the pics youve posted.

I just came back from my moms house which is about 10 miles away. I did the test cuts. And I think maybe this could be an electrical problem, not with my house, but with the grid. Since it did the same thing at my neighbors house. The lines all looked clean this time. I'm going to do a few more cuts here at my house and compare.

Do you happen to have a UPS battery backup?  If the problem is with the electrical supply, this may smooth it out some.  I would think the internal power supply would do that, but maybe not.

The other thing that is possible is RF interference from something.  Do you live close to a cell tower or something like that?

I don't have a UPS, but Howard from USC mentioned getting one or a line conditioner. There shouldn't be any interferance, from here I don't see any towers, antennas or anything around here. But I do live in between two huge hills. So a tower may be hidden.

Would the line conditioner or ups help with this?

Speedoggy; no way in hell! lol

A UPS or line conditioner should deliver a steady flow of power...exactly what is required. It certainly couldn't hurt..since the thing cut OK at your mom's it has to be the location.

This is certainly one for the books.

anyhow, a UPS is always good to have. I can't have one because the wiring in the house is so old...and I have had the power blink right in the middle of cuttinga  job and it was a mess.

A UPS or a quality power strip would help condition the power a bit.

If you happened to know someone that had a oscilloscope and could test the power at your house for correct phasing, that would tell you if it was a problem.  Also, you could have someone check the house for proper grounding, although if your neighbor has the same problem, this would be less likely.

unless the same person built both houses. I had a bad ground at my shop and had to get it fixed.

My wifes step brother is a certified electrician and could prolly come in do what you said about the oscilloscope.

Hmm, also another thing I never thought about. We have through Sprint what is called the "Airave" which plugs into my wireless router and transmits a signal up to 2000 square feet because I do not get cell phone service where I live in between 2 huge hills. This is in the same office as the cutter. I'm going to try and unplug it and see if possibly this could be the cause.

Hmm....  This could be interesting.

Also, where do you live (roughly)?  I know in some parts of the country, they still use what is called SWER (single wire earth return) power distribution.  This could cause a problem if it is the case.

This issue is getting more and more interesting by the minute! Keep us posted Mader.

One thing you can do is try a UPS.  if it doesn't help, unplug the UPS from the wall so it's running on battery and try the cutter again.

Most UPS's feed the AC thru unfiltered, unregulated, only a surge supressor.  They are what's called a "stand by power" unit.

The more expensive ones operate the equipment off of the inverter at all times.  These provide full power filtration, regulation, spike and brownout protection as well as power loss protection.

If the cellphone tower in your house (lol) doesn't fix it I'd try finding a "full time" UPS.

THis is better than 'who shot J.R.' I can't wait to see how it turns out.

according to the specs it will. Have you tried unplugging the sprint thing?

Yeah, I would try a UPS next.  Probably should also try to get the power and ground of the house tested as well.

This should work but I can't tell if it's a switchover or continuous.

Based on the 4 unique machines, we can be certain it's your environment considering that your friend says your machine cuts perfectly where he is and that your machine works at your mom's. Now, is it the electrical or something else? Do cell-phone amplifiers have the ability to muck with electrical devices?

The fact that the machine exhibits the same behaviour at your neighbor's doesn't rule out your cell-phone expander, but, I would try a line-conditioner. This is something you can get online or from Fry's...but make sure wherever you buy it you can return it if needed. They can be expensive and I am not sure if you'd want to keep it if it doesn't solve the issue, but they're good to have.

So, once you've removed variables such as interference from neighboring electonics....it could be the grid in your area (as you've mentioned) and then you might want to try a line conditioner for your cutter. I'd also check with your electric company..they may be able to shed some light on the issue and may help fix it for you...especially since it's affecting your cutter and potentially, your income.

Wow, I missed out on a lot of discussion today.  I sent my cutter to Mader to test.  I know this machine works perfect - at least at my shop.  I used it for 3-4 weeks before my second cutter came in.  The first cutter I put away as a spare.  Always nice to have a backup. B)

I have a feeling that the UPS or line conditioner will do the trick.  I heard of something similar several years ago when someone I knew was having a lot of computer problems.  A friend recommended a UPS, and darn it - it worked!  Apparently the power (amps or volts - don't remember) would fluxuate, confusing the device.

These days there are many devices being put on our electrical systems.  They make a bug repeller that you plug into your household outlet, which emits an electrical signal that annoys bugs, rodents, whatever.  Something like that could be messing with Mader.  Maybe a neighbor has a pest problem and the signal is crossing over to Mader's house.  ;D
