Racingnut 0 Posted August 27, 2007 I bought a cutter a few weeks ago, unpacked it and assembled the stand. Been sitting there in the corner, because I'm not sure what to use as a computer. I was thinking of getting a new laptop; however I think just about any computer can be used for vinyl cutting. My question is what kind of computer are you using and are you surfing to net as well or would it effect the cutter? I guess that's more than one question.... Thanks, Nut
stickygrafix 2 Posted August 27, 2007 I personally wouldn't use a laptop....but that's just me from personal experience. With a laptop you are limited to either using USB or a usb to serial converter because most laptops don't have any other plugins.
BannerJohn 1,324 Posted August 27, 2007 For mine,I use a 4 year old computer I had sitting around...1,1ghz, 256 Ram, nothing very fast or special. But,that's all I use it for, and it works very well. I agree with Sticky...I wouldn't use a laptop.
edge 67 Posted August 27, 2007 When I got my Copam last spring, rather than burden my desktop with another device and additional software I loaded everything cutter related to a 2.6 Anthelon laptop I had not been utilizing. The cutter I received came with the USB- RS232 adapter and necessary software. I should probably knock on wood before saying this..I've had no real issues with this installation. Why do some people drive Cadillacs when an Escort will get them there just as fast? Cause it's what they feel comfortable with. The same probably applies to computers to some extent. Go with what you feel is most comfortable.
BannerJohn 1,324 Posted August 27, 2007 Exactly. I see computers at yard sales and pawn shops for under $50 that will run signblazer just fine.I have one here now that I got for $15! I can buy 512mb of Ram on ebay for around $30....why waste your main computer's cpu power? I think it is a VERY GOOD idea to have a dedicated computer for your sign software. kenimes 42 Posted August 27, 2007 If you have a choice, go with XP or older. SBE will run on XP, ME, 98, 2000 and Vista, but Vista is a new OS, and still has serveral quirks that may affect performance.

jeff g 0 Posted September 15, 2007 I'm using a Dell Latitude CPi. 650 MHZ P3 w/ 512 meg of RAM running XP Home. It interfaces with my Pcut via USB. Works like a champ and doesn't screw me up with space. My main computer is in a small office that doesn't have space for the 36" Pcut, so I have to use the laptop to control the Pcut. just email my designs to an address that I set up for the pcut and then just use the laptop to download them and import into Sign Blazer.
