Static Cling

Recommended Posts

I've played with cling a little and have been very happy with my results so far. Before I ever bought my cutter I had hand cut some numbers and applied them to magnetic backing and cling. The cling looks more like a permanent sticker and it might even stay on as well as the thick magnetic stuff I used. I've only tested the cling up to 70 MPH but so far it has stayed on for me.

The cling I have used is GMI #2305 White. I bought a 24" X 10 yd/ roll. I applied the cheap starter vinyl I bought from US Cutter to it dry. It got a lot of air bubbles in it but they seem to mostly go away after it sat over night. The left over bubbles I popped with a pin and smoothed most of them out. When I pull it off I roll it up and it gets pretty wrinkled. I put it back on with windex and a squeegee and it smooths right back out.

My latest set of numbers even form over a body crease.

If you have any car clubs running autocross or SCCA Solo 2 in your area you might be able to sell them some number and class letter sets. A lot of guys use that wimpy thin magnetic stuff and they blow off pretty bad. The good quality cling sticks and it sticks to anything including plastic and fiberglass. That makes it usable for Vettes and S2000 doors and the like.

SandMan , That is really good to know . Thanks for sharing that , I have been wonndering how well it would hold on . 70 mph certainly tests it . I'm going to make some signs for a few people who escort for me while towing mobile homes . They don't want permanent signs so doing what you do is going to be perfect .

Nice looking car . How many people reconize the Donahue # style ? I've always wanted to roadrace a car , but never have . Congradulations on your results ( I read about in this thread or another ;D )

So much for my bragging. Both my numbers blew off on the way to the track this morning. The SM panels stayed on but I guess I didn't have the large circles down good nuff over the door crease and I reckon the air got underneath them there.

As cool as the large ones looked I think I'll do the next pair smaller so it doesn't have to conform to that body crease.
