    Newbie looking for advice

I am looking to cut vinyl primarily for use in engraving rough granite. I purchased a used (probably 15 years old) Roland Camm1 CM24 a couple of years ago and just cannot figure out how to get my Mac to "talk" to it. So, I'm throwing in the towel and starting from scratch. I'd like to spend $1500 or less but could spend a little more if I would get a better bang for my buck. I will obviously need software too. If it makes sense for me to buy a used PC instead of using my Mac, I would be open to that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    Hello From Mckinney TX.

Hi there, New to the page. I work with Personalized Touch and run Zeus Skate Wheels. We have been using a 2 cricuts for about 6 months now and needed something larger. We have had this plotter (UScutter 2) for over 6 years now and only have used for vinyl decals. Hoping to learn new things to expand our business of decal and heat transfers.
  6. Hello. My name is Desiree. I'm a 27 year old graphic designer in Texas. I have just purchased a 34" cutter from uscutter and a 15x15 heat press from amazon with guidance from someone who has been in the sign business for many years. I'm hoping to get most of my information from here and crossing my fingers that this is a valuable resource. If you have time to chat or are interested in my setup and ways you can help or we could collaborate let me know! Like I said, I'm a graphic designer so I'm already very familiar with Adobe Illustrator. Thanks!
  7. Hello, I've been searching around the forums for a while, but I can't find and answer to my question. Will the limitations of having a 15 inch servo cutter outweigh the benefits of having a 24 inch or greater stepper cutter? I'm aware the answer largely depends on the type of work i will be doing, but I've yet to decide my focus. The two types of machines in question seem to be around the same price, which brought me to wonder if a 15 inch cutter would be wide enough. Please comment with your opinions and type of work you mainly do. Also, if you use a 15 inch cutter and regret buying it, please let me know why. Thanks
  8. I'm looking into opening a small vinyl business on the side for now and see how it goes. I have little to no experience but love the idea if designs etc. I have a eye for the details and love making stuff cool. Any help advice on start -up equipment would be greatly appreciated .

    New and looking for feedback

I would love some feedback from those who are EXPERIENCED!! Starting a new business & want to add in Vinyl/ heat press options to my work but have NEVER worked with it (minus pre-made decals). My husband slowly put away money to surprise me for Christmas to get a cutter & start, but he received most of his information from SIGNWAREHOUSE. I have been researching the last few weeks and found that I like speaking with US CUTTERS a lot better than the other companies. Not too impressed with sign warehouse, or the information they gave my husband....but they gave him an amazing deal on product. I am looking at the Roland GX-24 OR Titan 3-28" - But I don't know a lot! Trying to also compare the GraphTek but unsure of which one to go with on theirs. I like the idea of the optical eye (but is this a HUGE deal?) I like the idea of having options for thicker material being used in the future, (but how needed is this?) I need some thing easy on technology end, durable, and that I can incorporate into my business (work a lot with wood, glass, ceramic, vintage items) Looking at going to craft shows, etc... and possibly transporting this, so I didn't want anything too hefty. Budget is $2000 for everything. Need suggestions of starting tools and software that people LOVE! I like to create and have set clipart. Titan 3 comes with RAZORCUT and would like to know if others have used this and what do they think compared to other software. I appreciate ALL thoughts and comments in advance...its truly invaluable to me and I will take every suggestion and process it through! THANK YOU!! -Alie

    Newbie here

Hey everyone! I am a newbie from the Northern Colorado area. I am a web and graphic designer when I am not working in the Oil Field. I just purchased my first cutter, so Im sure you will be seeing me around frequently and I'm sure I will have many questions along the way! Edit - Might as well add this here...I purchased the MH871 and it came with Sure Cuts A Lot Pro. I know this is a value cutter, but I wont be printing large numbers at once. Should work well, right? I am designing in Photoshop, although I should switch to Illustrator I guess.
  12. hi all. new to this forum, and forums in general. also new to vinyl cutting! i'm wanting to buy a good quality and fairly priced vinyl cutter/software, beginner level. open to USCutter brands or others. any support is appreciated! i'll be using the cutter to make sticker designs.
  13. hi all. i have an odd question, if you are starting a sign business, t-shirt business, or any side/full-time business where you will be using decals, what do you guys think is a more viable and sustainable business model: 1. - buy all your own equipment, learn the software and market yourself? - OR - 2. - outsource all your cutting needs to a cut store and then use the decals for whatever your venture is? i know it depends on quite a few factors but let's assume you have someone who knows how to operate the software and equipment if you're going the "on your own" route. i'm not sure the long-term costs of continually purchasing your own vinyl roles and machinery upgrades/maintenance, that's why i'm posing this question. any feedback is appreciated! fyi working off mac and have posted same question in mac discussion forum.
  14. hi all. i have an odd question, posting here (as I have a mac) as well in the general discussion forum. if you are starting a sign business, t-shirt business, or any side/full-time business where you will be using decals, what do you guys think is a more viable and sustainable business model: 1.

  16. So, I made a leap and spent 500 dollars on some vinyl and IT was a freaking steal!! No, like, there is over 1000 ft of vinyl most 12in.x24in. some 24in.x24in. some heat transfer TONS OF application tape like industrial sized rolls!! So, if anyone needs some samples of colors I can help you out. Most is Oracal, some is easy weed! BUT, here is the thing not all of it is labeled sooo, i'm having some trouble finding the brand and the type; is there a way to differentiate between heat transfer, indoor and outdoor rating without markings!? Also, I have a ton of chalkboard vinyl if anyone is interested in buying some I can take pictures of what I have and upload it. I have sample squares I cut a 1inx1in. square of each sheet of color I have, no rolls yet but, I can get those going. Actually, i'm going to make a sample sheet with the squares now and take a pic.. I know the colors won't be exact but you'll get the point and if you want a color I'll list every color I have and the amount of sheets too. Keep in mind its 12in.x24in. THANKS AGAIN GUYS YOU ALL ROCK!! EACH BOX IN THE PICTURE IS FULL OF 12x24 Sheets I added a picture of the chalk board vinyl tell me if you like the project (the giraffe) I made for my Niece. Rough stages but I plan to do better.
  17. ZombieWrangler

Howdy from a new Texas Vinlyist.

I had spent way too much over the years buying vinyl graphics for my Jeep, ZombieWrangler, and with the harsh nature of off-roading they were starting to show some age, had damaged some parts, mud and dirt and many power washes had started peeling parts away. I decided to redo all the lettering at once, and figured I would outfit new newest family member, ZombieElement, I was staggered by the cost to get custom work done. I looked at the small hobby units, but it just wouldn't do the scale of my ideas. That landed me here and with a Laserpoint II starter bundle. So I jumped in head first and cleared the initial obstacles, but now I've got to step back and read a little more of the instructions. Love it so far, have made my share of dumb mistakes like trying to cut too close to the edge and not setting home point right, but so far so good. I was already an IT professional and web designer, so the setup and application use has been pretty easy. My questions are now more like 'how do you know when a blade needs changing' and what materials work best for what applications and are there speed/pressure guidelines that might work better than the default settings for some things.. Now I'm off to go read through topics, I'm sure there is months worth of tips to catch up on. Thanks USCutter, great machine, tutorial videos, and now I'm looking forward to the community. Just Starting

I'm a designer with some sign shop experience from college and we've been having a ton of small decal jobs come in for a restaurant that we've just launched. So I've convinced my boss to looking into purchasing a plotter for our office so we don't have to continuously bother printers for these little odd jobs. Are there any recommendations for plotters on the cheaper side that produce decent work? We're not looking to purchase a $1,000 plotter or anything. Just one that can get some simple tasks done. Do you think that it's worth it to purchase a cheaper plotter? Thanks in advance -CJ

    Newbie - Please Help

Hello. I have been researching different vinyl cutters for over a month now and still have no clue which one I should get. I have found that there are good and bad reviews on basically every company and every machine. Im trying to keep the price at $600 or less. I make (and sell) wreaths, signs, decorations, etc..As my business is growing I now have a higher need for a vinyl machine. I want a machine so that I can do my own customizing instead of having to get someone else to cut my stickers (Of names, quotes, etc) My husband is a sports coach, so I was hoping to also be able to make things such as magnets, decals, signs for his team Basically, I would mainly use the machine for smaller objects (20" or less), but I want to have the capability of making something larger (48" or so)if possible Another question I have is - (I hope this makes sense) Does a larger machine do just as well with smaller projects as the smaller machine. For example, would a 12" decal look the same if cut with a 54" cutter vs a 28" cutter? Would the lines/curves be as sharp? Any advice is welcomed! Thanks in advance!!
  24. I am a total newbie to this, I have never cut vinyl before or worked with graphics programs, but I am extremely good with electronics and pick up on computer software and hardware very easily. That being stated I need some advice in which way i should go with my budget. - What i am looking to do is start a small business working in conjunction with a non profit Greyhound Rescue to help raise money and awareness to our efforts. The proceeds would go to helping pay vet bills and feed these animals as they live in their foster homes. What we would like to do is be able to print vinyl decals and also make t-shirts to sell on the internet through eBay, our website, and at our local adoption events that we host weekly... nothing big time but the equipment would see a decent amount of use. My question is, where do i start? If you personally had $1000 to spend to start an effort like this what would you buy? what would be the best "bang for the buck" that could start us out and get everything stated above done? I would love to hear your opinions please let me know what you think. Thank you all so much in advance.
  25. Just thought I would post this for all the people who were just like me.................dreaming, researching and trying to decide on a cutter to buy, the company to buy from, etc. I'm a newbie and just got started 2 days ago so I don't know much yet. The one thing I can attest to is that THIS company and the people in this forum have been GREAT so far. After reading, watching videos, etc I decided on the Graphtec CE5000 package deal $1695.00. I was amazed at all that I recieved with this package: Great plotter/cutter, 12 rolls of vinyl, Corel x3, clipart design software, x-acto knife, extra blades, 10 squeegees, application tape, application solution & spray bottle, weeding tool, another type of cutting tool. It is a sign shop in a box or 3 boxes! And....the FREE downloads from this site, Inkscape, Signblazer are amazing. As for support, I've had multiple people from this forum welcome me and offer help. Really made me feel great. And.....I called Customer Support at UScutter and actually got a human! Dave, I think was his name. He answered my question quickly and professionally. I may not get this dream off the ground but I do know I chose the right place to get started! Thank you UScutter and those that have helped me so far and those who will in the future. Jeff Bristol, Va.
