One week to go.......:)

    Thanks Goose! And thanks for not chopping me down on my last question. I should know better than to ask questions before I hit the all mighty GOOGLE search. I have watched a couple useful YouTube vids since my last post It's going to take time but I'll get it. We better keep this thread on topic for now. I am still interested in opinions on which products and brands to lean towards for my initial purchases. Also if I should expand my list at all, please let me know.

    I've had Inkscape for about a week but without knowing what does what I can't seem to grasp it. Is there training info or videos available?

    My Pricing Calculator

    <blockquote class='ipsBlockquote'data-author="Wildgoose" data-cid="347741" data-time="1394575624">
the first hobby I have ever had that was a money maker instead of a money PIT!

THIS is what I am looking forward to. Too many hobbies & too much money spent in the past few years just to have something to keep myself busy. Soon I will be busy busy and hopefully on my way towards some extra $$. In regards to pricing; I see both sides of the coin. Overcharging could drive business away but cutting yourself short will not only put less in your pocket, it could indeed drive the entire market down. That isn't good for any of us. See it too much on ebay..... Penny sellers Guess it's a fine line but quality products and good service will usually pay off in the end.

    Another piece of garage art for a friend....

    Yet another piece of inspiration for me That is pretty cool Carwash! Along with the rest of your work this makes me believe a cutter is the right choice for my first machine. I assumed the multi color graphics would be too much for me but the more I surf around the more inspiration I find. This is a great site! Can't wait to get my cutter

    Yes very nice! I definitely want to attempt this when I get my cutter. Is it difficult process. How does it compare to the photo?

With a different font of course. The firefighters running the hose is a nice touch. Seems to be quite a few members here producing work for firefighters/departments. I think it's great! Much respect for those who risk their lives to save others!!! I would be honored

    Shirts anyone?

    Love it! That looks like a nice piece of business. Just how many T's is that? My father in law has an old school Octopus for manual screen printing which used to make him some good cash. It just collects dust most of the time now. Care to save me the search and share your setup?

    Hello Vinyl

    Been interested for a long time, know very little, researching the industry now, leaning towards Graphtec CE6000-60, lots to learn before I dive in, very excited though

    Hello Vinyl

    Thanks slice. Most CL ads asking to reply to personal emails are scams. Been there done that

    Hello Vinyl

    Found a Dell Latitude E6500. Is there a serial port in this spec list of ports? IEEE - 1394, docking connector, USB 2.0 (x4), VGA, Display Port, RJ-11 (optional), RJ-45, eSATA, USB PowerShare, headphone/speaker out, mic

    Hello Vinyl

    Well I do not want a tower in my shop so I'll have to see how much it will cost me for a used laptop with a dedicated serial port. There are a few on CL for under $250 but not sure on the port. I am leaning towards a PC laptop for the cutter as long as I can design on my main Mac. I JUST WANT SIMPLICITY, RELIABILITY AND SUCCESS My head is so full of info right now most of which makes little sense to me at this point. I am a hands on learner. Show me and I get it! I'm about to start poking my nose around my favorite local sign shop!! Ha Ha Actually he is a pretty cool cat. He may just give me some free advice and hands on experience. After all, I will never be a threat to his business. They are TOP DOG in the area.

    <blockquote class='ipsBlockquote'data-author="slice&dice" data-cid="346143" data-time="1393634387">
Howdy.

I would NOT buy a mac to run a cutter.
My first choice would be a cheap WinXP machine (under $100) -- either a desktop or laptop model, and I would want it to have a dedicated Serial port.

Thanks Slice! Could you please clarify on the "dedicated serial port"?

    Hello Vinyl

    Yesser Mac is the chit! No doubt in my mind there. Zero issues, Zero viruses in the 9 years I've been running the same one. I would have been through at least 4 PC's in that time with tons of frustrations to boot!!! So MAC or a POS PC as a designated cutter brain?

    Hello Vinyl

    I'm listening........ I guess I was thinking Mac so I could do some of the work in my office. Been looking for an excuse to buy a Macbook Air for work but if it is that limited then......?......? Would I have the ability to design some on my office Mac, save on a thumb drive and transfer it to XP? Novice here and pretty lost with this end of it all.

    Hello Vinyl

    Great! I'm thinking about a MacBook Air and they do not have a drive. Is all of the software downloadable or will I need to buy the $80 external drive? Probably be a good thing to have anyhow.

    Hello Vinyl

    Thanks! According to my wife I do tend to over analyze most things. Which I still believe is a good thing. In this case though I made a relatively quick decision on the cutter after a little research. It's pretty cut n dry. Now onto the rest..... I am partial to Mac and have one in my office but will be buying a new one for the cutter in my shop. Does it need to be connected to the cutter 24/7? Would like the ability to use it for other work when not cutting. Software, design etc is my week point for now

    Hello Vinyl

    That's one of the best things about these forums and the world wide web!!! A little research and I can make a semi informed decision based on other peoples experiences. I joined vinylforum.org also but so far this one seems to have more action. Could just be the timing. Hoping to learn from both sites and enjoy this new adventure. Thanks for the welcome!!
