How many mils in a mm? A mil is a fraction of a mm.
Booper replied to kenimes's topic in Pre-sale questions
In the metal trade they generally dont call it mills, they call it thou (short for thousandths of an inch) to help avoid some of the confusion between standard & metric. A standard white piece of paper is about 2 thou (or 2 mills, or 0.002 of an inch), you can get yourself a cheap micrometer or vernier caliper and measure it quite easily. Just to add to the confusion. lol! -
Not sure how your software does it, mine you just click break polyline and delete the unwanted paths, here is a Youtube vid of it on Roland CutStudio but the concept should be the same for your software,

trying to make a windshield logo with the correct curve
Booper replied to redalert's topic in SignBlazer
I cover the top of the windshield with app tape, trace the curve of the windshield, pull it off, measure the length from left to right in a straight line, measure the drop of the window from the top to the bottom of the curve and copy those numbers into your software and curve the text to match that line. Having said that, I have seen a few people on here that have said they just do them straight with no curve and they fit regardless. -
I know it's all been said...but i'm swimming in alligators! Gotta sec to help?
Booper replied to kimmy's topic in General discussion
Just another option, my first cutter was a Signmax 24" that came with the stand & WinPCSing basic for about 500 bucks & that machine was a TANK. Never had a single problem with it. Its a rebranded Redsail, not really sure if any other companies are using it under another name but I definately give it a thumbs up. And yes it is noisy too. REALLY noisy compared to my Roland LOL! -
Exact same process in Roland CutStudio, I know that doesnt help you much but there are quite a few videos on youtube of people doing it.

This is more of a general question, a buddy of mine is a professional graphic artist and does EVERYTHING from scratch (except fonts) & we were having a conversation today about free vector art. He is a purist, and thinks that using ANYTHING other than your own work whether its free to use or not is plageurism. While I would love to be a professional designer and do all my own stuff like he does, I just dont have the skills. What is YOUR opinion on using free vector art that is offered up on websites with the freeware license agreements attached, and manipulating it or altering it to fit your need? Im not talking about stealing peoples work and slightly modifying it to be a prick or copyright infringement, but using legitimate freeware that is readily available??
-
I think the people getting sued are the ones knowingly cutting brand name stuff like monster logos or fox logos etc. If you download a vector pack of flames or something like that, alot of times it comes with a readme file that has the licence info in it like Free to use for personal use or free to distribute etc. Nice work Marek!

I use 651 about 90% of the time, but if it was for say body stripes on a nice car, I dont think i'd feel right going with anything other than the Premium stuff.

I did my banners all wet with RapidTac 2, no bubbles at all during application, but you really REALLY need to work all the moisture out from behind the vinyl before you roll it up (vinyl side out) or let it sit overnight to fully dry before rolling it up for delivery as I have found you get bubbles and tunnels on some stuff when you goto unroll it. Just my experience & Ive only done about 6 or 7 banners so far. All Oracal 651, and Bandana Banner in rolls.

100 small decals
Booper replied to LegitGraphics's topic in Business Practices, Sales and Pricing, etc.
Just an add in to the whole "friend" thing, I have done decals for a lifelong friend that owns a Detailing shop and I charged him FULL WHACK, not because im a huge prick er anything but I bring my Ram Truck and Magnum to him on a regular basis to get cleaned and he charges me FULL WHACK to clean them too. Sometimes giving someone a stupid low price deal can hurt your bottom line, the way we do it is to support each other at regular prices and we both make money. Obviously this wont work in all instances but in our situation it does. -
