I am re-doing anothers work at my local Fire dept. Has anyone worked with the specialty film that is gold leaf or engine turn. Looking for a brand that will not fade or peal like the stuff they used before me. I know most are rated at 6-7 years outdoors, but I was curious if there is not somthing better out there and if you have used it. Thanks Tom

Has anyone here attended this Expo? And was it worth it. Looking for any old reason to go to Las Vegas (like I need a reason) Thanks Tom.

Your mirror looks a lot better than my first attempt at etching. I did a lot of practicing and last Christmas (2009) I etched a badge into a mug as a example and took it to the local police dept. I thought I would get 10 or so orders, I ended up with 45. I charged $10.00 each and got the mugs at the dollar tree. That was about 200 mugs ago. Since December I have purchased another cabnet and a Rayzist masking system. I use the Rayzist film for the front and vinyl for the backs (personalised). I still charge $10.00 for the mugs (single side) in orders over 10 and $15.00 each if they want something on the back. For less than 10 its $15.00 and $20.00. I still use 651 vinyl for a lot of my projects, however in big orders the Rayzist film cut the time to produce masks from hours to minutes. Its a lot more expensive (about $1.50 per mug depending on the size) but the time saving is worth it for me. Other things I have etched are wine bottles, plates, cups, aluminum water bottles, picture frame glass. Places I have gotten orders from include Police/Fire/EMS, Gun Club (awards), Local wedding and Limo Service, Caterers and gift shops (candle holders). I am currently using a sand to etch but am switching over to Aluminum Oxide soon. With the sand the chip (cut) is large and rough. The 150/220 Aluminum Oxide will give a more frosted finish. There is a lot of good information from others else where on this site about sandblasting/etching. I have read it all and it helped me a lot get started. Hope this helps, I am learning everyday and can really use new ideas. Tom.

I add $15.00 to $20.00 to the price of the Champagne. Tom.

At a Christmas party my wife and I needed gifts for a gift exchange. The max you could spend was $5.00. I found some Champagne that was on sale, etched a big snow flake on one and a snow man on the other, along with some info about the party and the year. They were the hit of the gift exchange. I explained I could put just about any saying on the bottle, for weddings, anniversary's and such. Got five orders that night. I used a red colored bottle for the Christmas exchange, but have done the green bottles also. Talked with the local limousine company and a wedding planner, all have shown an interest. I asked the Limo Co. about etching their glassware. They loose so much through breakage and theft they were not interested right now. Tom.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I was having a time getting the vinyl off once I was done with the sand blasting. I was using my fingernail or a scraper and it was taking longer to get the vinyl off than put it on. While washing off the dust and sand, I accidentally discovered if you put the mug or what ever under hot water for a couple of seconds the vinyl will almost fall off along with the tape. I use BGS Vinyl mostly (because its thick) but will use whatever scraps I have laying around the shop. Tom.

Well you see I'm a racer myself for over 25 years and remeber when all numbers were painted on. I know first hand who at my local tracks can afford spend money on flash and who can not. Its a fact that many of the Hornet/4cly cars can not afford to spend a lot of money because they don't have it. When they have $300.00 in a race car its hard to justify $150.00 for decals. I know the kids work real hard all winter to build, and I think they deserve to look their best on race day. When I talk to the new guys I encourage them to spend money of safety gear not flash. I sponsor (for free) our local High School team and the kids are very proud of what they do in the shop and I want it to look good on the track for them. You see not everyone is in NASCAR or drives a late model. The upper classes don't want a basic number kit and when they come to me we start to work on a price. And you are right, I am known as the cheap (price) sticker guy to the low buck people, but I am also known as a guy who will do a good job at a fair price to others. I don't make stickers to make a lot of money, I do it to help off set the cost of my hobby (race car) and to help others who share my hobby and love of the sport. Because I'm not a shop owner I guess I should have stayed out of this conversation. But please don't assume when the guy says he needs stickers for a race car he has deep pockets. Tom. Ya know they may be willing to pay more than $50.00 but I offer it to them for that price so I just don't know I never asked.

Don't want to hurt any feelings but I too offer the $50.00 special here in Oregon (numbers, basic colors, driver name and a couple of small sponsor names in basic font). Custom orders go up accordingly. I bought my first cutter 4 years ago because I got tired of the prices charged locally for decals for my own car ($150.00). I now have three cutters and a fairly decent 2nd income. I'm not sure what you folks are using for vinyl but with race cars I use Oracal 651 or 751 as the decals are temporary at best. I figure I'm using about 3 to 4 yards of 24" material at a cost of $10.00 to $15.00, including tape for the kit. The folks who buy the kit usually upgrade which brings in more as the year goes on. I know that if I quoted a $100.00 price to most of my customers the rattle cans would come out and the numbers would be painted on so only Krylon would be making any money. Tom.

Longevity of vinyl transfers?!?
FastTrackSigns replied to metatrox's topic in T-Shirts and/ or Garments
We have never used Siser but we use a similar brand. We do a second heat cycle after removing the clear backing. We use a Teflon sheet between the transfer and the heat unit on both cycles. I agree with more heat and time in the press. When we first thought about doing t-shirts we asked our supplier for transfer samples. I cut out small designs and strips. The strips and designs were pressed on a white t-shirt. That shirt got placed into every wash and dry for about one month, sort of our science lab. The shirt gave out before the transfer samples did. -
Thank You.
