High School Graphic Arts class in need of suggestion
dwp99 replied to Imaprinter's topic in Business Practices, Sales and Pricing, etc.
Let me first start off by thanking you for teaching our youth. I think you probably need to look into a laser cutter. Product packaging is designed , printed and cut out in mass quantities. They are cut out using die cutters which stamp out hundreds in a short period of time. With the kids, they will only be doing a few of each design. The laser cutter will work great for that purpose. Then you can put in a request for a flatbed printer to print on the cardboard stock. lol With a vinyl cutter there is software that is specific to vinyl cutting. With a laser cutter, the students can learn cad and cam software and also running G code. With this knowledge, it could lead to other careers such as CNC or architecture if a student so chooses. Autodesk has a program called Fusion 360 which I believe is free to students. However I'm sorry to say, I can't recommend any brand of laser cutters. -

Have you tried Kijiji Here's a Grapghtec for $600.00 it's 42" so I don't know if you can use it. The ad doesn't say want model it is either but someone might be able to identify it for you. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-buy-sell-other/mississauga-peel-region/graphtec-vinyl-cutter/1440051495?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true -

Some where I heard that putting vinyl over an entire window that's out in the sun can cause the glass to crack. Something about heat and expansion. It was mentioned in a thread ,that a customer wanted to cover his store windows with vinyl. Of course the question was asked, "Why would you want to do that, what about security"? Window perf was brought up also.

There is what's called Limo Tint. Most window tint installers have it or can get it . It only lets in about 5% of the sun's light.

Trying To Incorporate A Image Into A Letter

I traced out what I think you wanted. But if you are using the Graphtec Studio Pro you can remove overlap. provided the letters and dog are two items You mentioned that you used it before with letters overlapping and it worked great. If they are separate, group the letters together, lay the dog on top of the letters, select both the dog and the letters so they are all highlighted and click remove overlap. unselect them by clicking anywhere off of the dog and letters then click on the dog and move it. you should have what I traced out above. -

If you weld that it's going to come out like this. -
In Flexi you must click on the font to change it. it won't change by hovering over the font name like in Microsoft word. However, in Flexi if you do click on the font name. Flexi creates a list at the top of the font list of all the fonts you clicked on. That makes it a little easier to find the font again.

Banger font is close.

I've used flat black vinyl on cloroplast with fluorescent vinyl letters with good luck. Just a suggestion,. If you paint the cloroplast, give the paint enough time to dry. Some paint will off gas and create air bubbles under the Vinyl.

Hoochie Display is very close for the font.

Another thing, you mention that you are a Newbie to vinyl cutting. The file you are trying to cut, is it a vector file or a jpeg? Vector files are the only files that sign software and cutters can cut. I'm not sure which file extension Artcut 2009 uses but some of the vector files used in vinyl cutting are Adobe Illustrator, PDF, EPS and SVG. Most fonts can be cut so you can try a test cut using letters. I hope this helps.

I have the Summa D60 that I run with Flexisign. I have had the Summa for at least 10 years and have had only one problem. That was a power supply that went bad. it was probably my fault because I use to leave the power on for long periods of time. I did find a replacement power supply and it's been running great ever since. I have no experience with other programs but can imagine the cutter will run fine with something different and windows 10. That being said the Summa is a great vinyl cutter, they track very well and can cut very detailed designs. The title of this thread is D60 but in the original post you mention a T140. These are two different cutters. the t140 being tangential which is even better than the D60's drag knife design. Dakota gave you links to the Summa site for manuals and drivers. I hope this helps a little. you've got a great cutter.

I also agree that the cutter is cutting too. The blade should just be making an impression on the backing paper. Another thing that will cause the vinyl to stay on the backing paper is it's age. If the vinyl is old it tends to be a little harder to get it off of the backing paper.
