  1. it is to compensate for errors. say you want to cut a 12x12 square and it actually cuts it 12x12.100....you can compensate for the error by adjust those numbers. very little reason to do it for sign making.

    inconsistent depth

the cutting strip is not as critical as you think. even if there is a little runout from one end to the other, it won't matter as long as the height of the cutter holder is set correctly. you can check it however. in manual mode, run the cutter all the way to one side. take the blade out of the holder and with the cutter down, insert the holder (without the blade in) and set the holder where it barely touches the cutting strip. tighten thumb screw. raise cutter holder and run it to the far side of the machine. lower the cutter. it should barely touch the cutting strip, like on the other side. if there is a gap, you have some runout. to check the runout in the other direction, reset the holder and repeat the procedure from this side, back to the other. a little runout shouldn't matter, but your cutter should be set to the right height on the LOW end of the cutting strip. the pressure setting will act as a "spring" and allow the holder to raise a little on HIGH end. remember to set the knife depth first, then the holder position, then finally apply enough pressure to hold the vinyl down on the cutting strip. only enough to hold it down...no more.
  3. there seems to be confusion as to the way the cutter actually works. the depth of the cut should be determined by the exposure of the blade. not pressure. the pressure should be adequate enough for the blade holder to push the vinyl down on the cutting strip and hold it there as cuts are made. no more. it should glide across the vinyl. imagine the vinyl as two layers (which it is). the blade depth should only go through the vinyl and partially into the backing. having the blade extended too far and trying to compensate by adjusting the pressure lower just doesn't work. also having the blade extended not far enough and trying to compensate by increasing the pressure is a cause of dragging. it takes very little pressure to hold the vinyl down and cut it. setting the cutter correctly can solve many problems with cut quality.
  4. no hub. i am running the same sign, but it does it on all of them. i would think it was fixed and i would try it and it would quit. i am now cutting the same vinyl over and over. are you talking about using a serial to USB adapter cable? how would that make a difference?
  5. will not finish a cut 90% of the time. locks the computer up. have to pull the plug. can't even shut down with task manager. i have... tried on two different computers. changed cable. tried different software. change baud rates. fixed setting in both the computer and the software to match manual. (hardware etc) changed com ports. tried pretty much everything. i have ruined 100.00 worth of vinyl trying to print two signs. it will get to a point and i get a "waiting." when i get this, i have to pull the plug. locks everything up. it has to be something in the buffer memory of the cutter...that's all i can think. ideas welcomed! i am going to lose a nice job if i don't get this thing going tomorrow. thanks in advance for the help.
