  2. I mean extra RAM for the cutter not the computer. I neglected to mention that when I got the new RAM for the cutter I installed it and it fried the motherboard in the cutter. They were kind enough to send me a new one for free. Now I am running better than ever.
  3. don't know how many of you have tried this but I just installed new RAM on my Refine MH721 and I think it fired my motherboard. All three lights are on and the screen displays a bunch of gibberish. Has anyone run into this problem? I turned it off and put the old ram back in and still the same thing happens. If anyone can help that would be great
  4. When you trace an image in illustrator you also trace it's background. This will cause a duplicate tracing of the image. The SignCut software will see this as two cut lines. if there are two lines directly on top of each other you wont be able to see them no matter how close you zoom in. Don't know if this is your problem with out seeing you file but it might help: Tracing a image in Illustrator: 1. Place your image and select it 2. Click "live trace" this command will be in different places depending on which version of illustrator you have. 3. Double click the image (this will expand the tracing into seperate entities) 4. Select what you want to keep(you may have to hold down the shift key to add items to your selection. example-the hole in the letter "O") 5. Once you have what you want selected go to edit>copy 6. Next select everything select>select all 7. Then hit delete 8. Imdeiatly hit paste (this will leave you with only what you want) This process will get rid of any extra strokes that will cause the cutter to cut lines twice. Here is a slightly different way to trace an image. Look at these photos and you will see what I mean. step one:import image (I just grabbed something from the internet. Hence the crappy tracing. Make sure whatever you trace has a high DPI like 300 - 500) step two:live trace image step three:double click or hit expand image Step four: choose what you want to keep and move it out of the way. This reveals the duplicate outline of the background that illustrator traced as well Step five: choose the excess and hit delete
  5. it sounds like a RAM or tiling issue. I would like to see the file as well.
  6. can you post the file. It could be that the cutter is running out of RAM. I ordered some new RAM for my machine and now its running pretty well.

    Power on

that is a bad motherboard. What you are describing is exactly what mine did when it went bad. It
  8. I would guess static. Do you have your cutter grounded?(little wire that came with the machine that can easily be missed) Sometimes my LCD on my refine would just go blank. I eventually had to replace my motherboard. Now everything is great.
  9. well the good news is that shortly after I installed the new motherboard I cleaned up and re-organized and now everything seems to be working fine...... Maybe I eliminated some interfering static somewhere shifting furniture or something. I have not yet cut that particular file but I have cut more complex larger files and IT WORKED!!!! so..... I will just have to take a closer look at that file and maybe generate it again. Thanks for your help and if I have any more problems I will email them to you. I have noticed that if I generate too many weeding lines in Signcut and send it to cut The software crashes but upon restart it works fine. Kind of annoying but hey it works.
  10. not sure what you mean. do you mean using the blade to the front holder? I don't think sign cut has a plot command

    The Line of Death Returns!!

here are my specs: IMAC 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB memory 500GB hard drive1 Leopard OS SignCut X2 CS3 Refine MH721 cutter with 4MB upgrade I have had problems with complicated cuts where about half way through it has a mind of its own and cuts a diagonal line through the work (afterwards it keeps cutting but renders about half of them useless). I thought it was a memory issue so I upgraded the RAM. It didn't really help and I am sill having a lot of problems here is an example. I was cutting about 50 or so of these machine guns. They are about 2" in length and 1" tall.

    The Line of Death Returns!!

    I have the same problem.
  14. well I updated and I am still having the problem. Its fine on small jobs (24" x 24") but if it gets any bigger it does the slash across everything. Here is a photo of the problem. Its approx 24" x 36" with about 75 - 100 machine guns that are about 3" x 1" each. I don't think the problem is with the file because I actually have had success cutting this file with the same machine and an older version of SignCut and an older PC.
  15. [move]I AM SURE THERE IS A BETTER WAY TO DO THIS. IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS LET ME KNOW[/move] FOR MORE PHOTOS GO HERE: http://www.flickr.com/photos/arhash/sets/72157594482100956/ step one cut out and weed vinyl. Make one larger than the other by adding a stroke weight in adobe illustrator and re-rasterizing it and then use auto trace. step two apply transfer tape step three apply gold sizing/glue. BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET IT ANYWHERE BUT INSIDE THE NUMBERS! apply gold leaf with a soft dry brush(a high quality shaving brush works well for big stuff and a really soft natural hair paint brush works well with the small stuff. You can also just use the paper backing that came with the gold leaf. clean up edges. its okay to leave it a little bit messy we will clean it up later. You can use an exacto to scrape the glass close to the numbers. It should look something like this. Make sure there is no gold leaf around the edges of your numbers apply second sticker on top of what you done. You only get one shot at the this so you have to be carefull. If you pull up after it has set you will pull up the gold leaf with it clean up with windex and you are all done! Its really nice to have the window in front of you when doing all of this. I have done a few in place and they are really tricky. just go slow and be patient. -good luck When you are done it should look a lot like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/137/370006284_729fca6977_o.jpg

    diffraco-lite holographic vinyl

I had that trouble with some thin foil. If you pre-cut the piece you are using off of the roll and then load it back into the machine then feed it back and forth the length of the cut it usually helps a lot. This relieves tension. --Arthur
  17. Yeah that is what I am thinking. Software. I will have to check on the update when I get off of work. I am usually good with that sort of stuff. Maybe it is a problem with the type of vinyl I am using that is generating more static. What is the brand that you use the most? I can switch. It would be good to know just for me. I don't really think that is it though. I use multiple brands and kinds (foil, static cling, regular, economy etc etc) Could someone post a screenshot of what the settings should be in the "cutter" section in SignCut with a refine cutter using a MAC? I am going to bet that I have some box unchecked or checked that is causing all of this. Usually when I update it fixes the problem temporary then after a couple of days it starts acting up. I am wondering if it would help to ground this cutter to an outlet instead of the stand? Thanks -Arthur
  18. I already use the Keyspan converter. It wouldn't work without it.
  19. Thanks man. Everything seems to be working now. The only thing that seems to be messing up is the same problem I was having before the RAM issue. Here is the issue: I will be cutting about 100 of the same thing (think machine guns in the picture above where my name is) and about halfway through I get the infamous "line of death". This of course is where the cutter stops cutting what I sent it and cuts a line across almost everything that it cut on its way back to the origin and then goes back to where ever it left off and continues the job. Its REALLY REALLY frustrating because I have tried just about everything. I have reduced the job load to about 20 pieces (same thing happened) I have ordered new RAM (same thing happened) I have unchecked small objects and unchecked weeding frame (same thing happened) I have tried different drivers (same thing happened) I have exported as EPS, I have updated and installed software (same thing happened). I don't know what to do. It seems like a software thing because sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. For instance that gold chain thing that I did worked fine, when I cut the guns right after it and it messes up. :why: :why: :why: I checked my file and it seems fine. I can cut one at a time perfectly. The bad part is I a blowing through a ridiculous amout of vinyl. I did however order a 50 yard 24" wide roll that I have not yet put a dent in. So I am doing okay but I would LOVE to resolve this issue. I have a refine MH721 Hardware: IMAC 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB memory 250GB hard drive Software: AI CS3 SignCut X2

    gold leaf numbers

is SIGNGOLD gold leaf or actually something you can put in the vinyl cutter? This seemed the easies way to do this. The black vinyl creates a masking for the sizing of he gold leaf. I don't know if you have used gold leaf but that was my second time and it was a bear. Any suggestions would rock. -arthur
  21. :jumping: well happy to say everything is up and running. The ram installed fine. The cutter started right up and now I am about to start my first cut with my new motherboard. Only one complaint.... no instructions. I took a ridiculous amount of photos before dismantling the old one and didn't have a problem with the new one. Everything has its own plug with the exception of a couple of grounding cables which actually had different colors on the cables but I figured it out. Thanks you guys for the help. Here are some photos of my show that just went up and was the ultimate demise of my machine. :thanks: :thanks: :thanks: oh yeah and here is a fun thing I did with some gold foil just for those of you who are curious I also got a hold of a laser engraver/cutter. Its made by Jorlink- I made these "punch- out" DIY bracelets here are some pics for that.
  22. just received my FED-EXed mother board. I am going to install the 4MB ram before installing the board into the cutter. I will report the results here when I am done. -arthur :notsure: :notsure: :notsure:

    Non working R721 and Mac

okay maybe I can help. I recently switched from being a 20 year PC user to being a "new" MAC user. Of course the first thing I wanted to know is if my Refine cutter would work with my new macs. Here is a few things that I ran into. First it wouldn't work with the normal USB connection. I had to go out and buy a Keyspan adapter. From what I read on the forum this seems to be standard with using MAC and Refine cutters. No big deal, I ran to the local COMPUSA and bought one. Can home installed all the driver and viola! working cutter. I as well ran into problems with SignCut. It started doing some really funky funky stuff like: random lines, pressure problems, carriage problems.... I mean the works. I was soooo pissed. Freaking MACs. I got over it and got on the forums and figured out a bunch of crazy stuff and here are my results: 1. ground your machine (this will cause a ridiculous amount of problems.) 2. Make sure after you register your software you run an update (this solved a bunch of the wild cuts problem) 3. Save from illustrator as an EPS file and then in Signcut go to file>open>.EPS 4. GET LEOPARD. leopard rocks but a funny thing happened.... things just started working better 5. Change the date on your system (this worked for me on a bunch of software on my PC it might work on a MAC)

sign cut crash on MAC OS 10.4.10

I am going to install leopard tonight!!! I will post here my findings. -arthur
  25. MAC G5 tower (non intel) Refine 751 cutter Keyspan serial adaptor sooooo. I just got a mac after being a LONG time PC user. My job requires me to be a MAC guy and the only reason I was holding off was because a certain 3D software package that has now been released for MAC has been released. Sooooo I switched. After getting my Keyspan serial adaptor and changing the baud rate to 4800 and doing some minor things like removing the rug under the cutter and grounding the machine I keep having a problem with SignCut crashing. If I export from illustrator and import into SignCut and just immediately send it to cut it does fine. If I add any additional weeding lines It just completely crashes. It is the weirdest thing because it was working just fine about a week ago and now all of a sudden...crash. I wonder if this has to do with OS software updates that I installed? If anyone can help that would be great? -Arthur
