Well, some of us are right-brain impaired. That'd be me :'( I'm good with the tech and logic stuff, not to so good with the creative stuff ... well, not in the design aspect, although I'm a decent MacGyver every once in a while.

LaserPoint Setup Questions
haumana replied to Larryc39's topic in LaserPoint Cutting Plotter Discussion
Hmm ... never noticed I usually only tweak the pressure or speed. If I can get it to cut right, I'm not going to mess with what works -
I like to use these guys every once in a while. http://logo-design-studio.com/default.cfm

Models available from USCutter: Refine - The is the machine that we started selling three years ago. Over that time it has undergone a number of improvements, and it remains a low-cost workhorse. It uses three pinch rollers because it has no fan to hold the material flat. It has two material holder rollers which allows you to lay material on the rollers (much better than single roller). Overall, it gets the job done. If you absolutely need a stand and the lowest price, this is the one to get, otherwise, we recommend the PCUT which can be purchased without a stand for about the same price. This machine is equivalent to the best machines offered by most of our competitors (really), and it includes much better software (important) and outstanding support. Because we are the volume leader, we are always able to beat all our competitors on price - always! Creation PCUT - This is a more recent model and it is meant to be a replacement for the Refine line. Overall, it is a heavier, more solidly built machine. It uses much better components such as fine grit material rollers that won't mark your material, a metal carriage with ball-bearing slides, and a powerful fan that keeps the material flat (eliminating the need for additional pinch rollers). It also uses a more modern circuit design and firmware which leads to greater long-term reliability and superior output. The primary advantage of this model is lower noise and higher reliability. USCutter LaserPoint - The brand new line from USCutter. This model is based on the Creation PCUT line, but includes a number of updates that we requested after hearing feedback from our customers. We have included a laser alignment mechnism that is built into the carriage which will allow precision alignment for contour cutting of printed images. While the contour cutting software is not available yet, it is very close to a beta release and will be provided as a free update to SignBlazer. In addition, this model has a slightly smaller profile which makes it easier (and safer) to ship. Finally, all models with stand include a newly design material basket which keeper your material from falling to the floor and getting dirty. We are able to offer this model at a modest increase in price over our very economical Creation PCUT model. Copam - Our top-of-the-line series. This machine offers features that are not available on any other cutter at this price point. Our 24" model weighs a massive 67 pounds (compared to 45 pounds for the Refine), and if you observe this model in person, you will see that no compromises were made. This machine is the machine you will want if you are a professional sign maker or if you are using thick material. The stronger motors will power through material like stencil board and sandblast mask. Of course, our top of the line machine is the fastest, quietest, and most accurate of the four, and it absolutely destroys all equivalently priced models such as the higher priced Enduracut Plus from Signwarehouse. This model also has a longer warranty term.

I think the people here think that no corporate company will bother to come down and put a stop to copyright infringement. There are so many that sell company logo's, license characters (i.e. Mickey Mouse, Strawberry Shortcake, etc.), and that it's not limited to vinyl. It's images that are put on handmade blankets, drawn on tupperware containers, wall hangings, children's clothing, bags, backpacks, etc. Nothing is sacred here. The cops only clamped down on bootlegged music once ... I always wondered why more people aren't getting busted for this stuff. Simply amazing. I'm not creative by any means, so my "custom" work is usually limited to names, and squiggly stuff that my nieces and nephews draw... I'll scan it, then turn it into a decal for them. Comes in handy when they go on excursions with their class or if the class pick a "mascot" for themselves. My nephews mascot is a butterfly, so all the kids draw butterflies and the teacher picks one to represent the class. I scan and cut so each kid has the butterfly with their name and it goes on their cubby hole boxes. Not a paying job, but the looks on the kids faces when they see their name in a sticker is priceless (especially since a lot of the kids names now days are either really funky, or spelled funky). I say cut a bunch of stuff that isn't copyrighted and see what kind of interest is generated from that. Even if it's only clever text stuff ... they love that!

We have a twice a week flea market here. There are always at least two or three booths selling vinyl decals. Some have the cutter hiding in a van so they can do on-site custom stuff, while others will take names and numbers for custom requests. There are all different colors and graphic decal on colorplast boards. Ranges in price based on size (rather than difficulty/detail). If you can keep secret how fast it really is to produce a decal, then people are willing to pay more if they think you "rushed" a custom job just for them. I would say go for it. Colorplast doesn't cost that much, you'd probably spend more time and money trying to put up samples on it than anything else.

LaserPoint Setup Questions
haumana replied to Larryc39's topic in LaserPoint Cutting Plotter Discussion
The test mode will cut a small block in the vinyl so that you can check the depth and pressure to see if the numbers make for decent weeding. Too little and it just scratches the vinyl without cutting it, too much and it'll just cut straight through the backing. It took me a while to get the depth and pressure. I still need to tweak it here and there - depending on the different vinyls that I use. I'm not sure if I could recommend one type of vinyl over another, but (Banner) John might be the guy to ask. I seem to recall seeing a photo of his workshop which included a drum set. -
Do tell .... what did you eat, and which one tasted better? The commercial makes it look really tasty.

Fixin to make my first banner

I think I still like your name, number and email without shadowing. If you're planning on leaving the five colors at the bottom of the banner, I would make them all equal widths ... that's just the a/r in me I think it looks great! -

I like the graphics split with the pertinent stuff in the middle. I think if you stick with a single color for your name, phone, and website it would look a lot cleaner. I have to spend a little more time and effort to read it to get past the shadowing effect. Other than that, I think it looks great! -
Good to know. I don't know how Costco or Sam's Club labels their salmon, but there's a good chance that they will only have one or two types for me to choose from. We eat a lot more long line fish here: mahi, ahi, aku, ono (wahoo), au, etc. You know, I really wish I knew what the english names are for those fishes, but being born and raised here, we're so used calling them by they Hawaiian names. Although we are now starting to get more "gassed" fish, but they stand out like sore thumb (it's so bright and pink). I like to eat a lot of sashimi (raw fish, as in used for sushi), and poke - a Hawaiian raw fish appetizer. But then again I always like my seafood and raw and fishy as possible

Awesome .. jobs before the equipment even arrives ... now that's some serious business planning. The forum will be here every step of the way to get you cutting! Hmm... I should probably be charging for my stuff rather than giving it all away to friends and family.

I would love to be able to nest the cutter under my desk or work table ... but then where are my doggies going to sleep while I work?

good to know (making a mental note of that ... as opposed of just being mental )

awesome! I bit the bullet and bought my LP with the stand. no casters, so I put those "furniture sliders" under the four feet. I know that someone asked why the stand didn't come on casters, and I think the answer was that it wouldn't be as stable. Well on the furniture sliders, it's rock solid, and why didn't someone consider the locking casters - like the kind that they put on gas grills?

Vinyl on a white (dry erase) board, with the prices written in with the pen.
