  1. so i'm making a few decals for a client this morning, but this one has me stumped. its a simple 8x3in decal with text in 631 black vinyl. instead of cutting the vinyl so that it leaves the text, what the client wants is the decal to be a black 8x3in box with the text removed so the text will be whatever color the wall is. i've been trying all morning to get the plotter to cut the decal as such but it keeps cutting it normally, not the negative, and i've wasted quite a bit of vinyl already trying to get this to work. if i pick any of the weeding options it just puts another box around the whole thing, which isn't helping. any suggestions? i'm out of ideas here. thanks!

    Best Way to Create Screens?

OH MY GOD WHY DID I NOT THINK OF THAT SOONER. damnit now my morning is going to be spent trying that out.

    Best Way to Create Screens?

only coating one side? i've never had good luck with that. applying the emulsion to the shirt side first, THEN applying it to the ink side pushes the first application back through the screen to the shirt side and allows the depth to be enough to get a good covering of ink on the shirt. i guess it depends on how thick the ink needs to be on the shirt. for a thinner water-based ink the emulsion probably wouldn't need to be too thick. for some of the super thick marshmallow-fluff-like plastisol white inks, the emulsion needs to be thicker, sometimes requiring a few layers of emulsion to get good coverage.
  5. hey guys- so i've been searching and reading as many threads as i can take in. (stating the obvious here, but this forum RULES.) lately i have been trying to educate myself on the particulars of the settings of my mh721 with use in signblazer to produce the sharpest cuts possible. all i'm really seeing is the topic of offset to correct the problem. i have used trial and error to get the offset as close as possible (~.5mm), and it does fairly well, however it isn't as sharp as i think it might be able to be. granted, i am cutting some rather small and detailed images and the rotation of the blade will inevitably cause some inaccuracies. i totally understand. i'm just wondering if there are any other settings, tweaks, etc that i may be able to try to get that will get me closer to perfection. i'm not asking for perfect, but i'd estimate that the accuracy i'm getting is about 90%, and i'm just looking for that extra 4-5% that would make a difference. i have also read about the blades and the differences between the 45 degree and 60 degree blades. it makes complete sense that the 60 degree blade may have better luck as the angle is steeper. i'm not completely convinced that it would do it, however, as there is so little of the blade that actually does the cutting. any ideas? better/different blades and/or different settings that you seasoned vets would like to share? thanks guys!

Just when I thought Ebay couldn't get any worse

which is ridiculous and ironic because that is what ebay is 'attempting' to stop. seems a necessary evil once july comes around. eBays whole idea to include shipping is ludicrous.
  7. thanks so much for the help guys. i think being prepared with that kind of information (quantity tiered pricing) will be incredibly helpful. good looking out. well that certainly makes two of us. i'll put your name on the first dollar!
  8. thanks guys. at screenprintr - haha, i'm getting into the cycling thing as of late, and i'd love to buy 1 bike per year from them, but these are crazy high end bikes... i'd go broke just trying to get their business! i do see your point though. i don't believe their intentions were to send me the classic 'well i'll give you lots of business later' vibe and drive down my price, but to give me a layout for their future business plans. who knows for sure though. i really don't agree with giving them the decal sets for free. i have given them samples of their logo with the vinyl i'll be using, as well as the template for them to mock up on their bike, so the freebies have been done. i think the final product pricing should reflect the total time and effort i've put into this project. that being said, i don't think that i'm going to be charging them for ALL the time i've put in. for example, they just emailed me and let me know of a few tweaks to the design after the mock up vinyl was laid. the tweaks just took me 30 minutes or so. that i'll do pro-bono. no big deal. they understand the value of my time and i think that'll go a long way.
  9. thanks for the replies guys. their emphasis was very much on working with someone locally, so i would be shocked if they decided to look to one of the cheap online wholesaler places, but stranger things have happened. i guess my worry simply stems from the possibility of selling myself short.

lets try this one... anyone guess?

well i appreciate the thought! i knew i had it somewhere and couldn't locate it. i never would have found it unless i posted up asking for it. as soon as i did that it was staring me in the face. damn murphy and his laws.

    Cornhole boards

ok, so i've seen these a few times on this board. i have to ask. what the hell is a cornhole board? i'm really puzzled. all i can come back to is beavis and butthead, and i'm sure thats not the direction i need to be looking. heh.

i was JUST going to post that. it really takes all guessing out of lining things up.
  15. So a friend of mine has a staples card and got some rewards that he let me use to purchase a WF1100 last night. Great deal at $100. not bad for a spur of the moment type of thing... can't complain. i was going to wait to purchase the whole printer with cobraink cis kit, but i just got a shirt job that required that i get a printer asap, and i'm a sucker for buying stuff. so far the thing has been fairly straight forward and prints like a champ. i threw some nice photo paper in there to see what i could get out of it and damn... looks great. (small side note - anything Hewlett Packard, especially printers, can die in a fire.) i have a few questions that i'm not finding the answers to concerning the inks and CIS kits. first... is the ink that is supplied and used with the cobra ink kits a different kind of ink than is supplied with the printer? to rephrase, will the stock ink work as well as the cobra ink kits or am i wasting my time with the stuff? i'm planning to send this thing out to get the kit installed once i have some time to spare away from it, but until then i'd like to start getting my feet wet with printing to vinyl. second, i'm seeing a lot concerning pigment vs dye inks. i've seen fairly definitively that pigment ink is the way to go, but i don't see many other CIS kits that contain pigment inks. does cobra inks have an option for installing the kits yourself? i'm a hands-on type of guy and prefer to do the installs/work myself if possible. i totally trust the guys, but as a hobby the install part of it is part of the fun. other than cobra, are there other reputable kits that are available? (i see a bunch online, but none that i can see that are any more or less reputable than cobra.) thanks again guys!

    Ebay Niche

  17. 4" high for that exact design with all the lettering and everything? i don't know if it would be possible to cut it that small, no matter what cutter you have. at 4" tall, some of that lettering would be 1/4" give or take, let alone how thin those lines are on the tire design. i can't see any way that it would actually come out unless it was printed. if it did actually cut cleanly, it would be a crazy pain in the ass to weed.

will 651 work for car graphics and wall graphics

you won't destroy the paint on his car with 651. thats basically what its designed for. 631 wouldn't last nearly as long on a vehicle, as it has quite a bit less tack than the 651. used some 631 for a small decal on a friends car, his rear quarter window. after about a week, you could actually press down and move the decal around a little on the window. it also left some residue when we took it off. on the flip side, 631 is great for indoor wall art and comes off perfectly when you need it to. 651 on the walls looks a bit strange because of its gloss - you can see all the imperfections of the wall behind the vinyl. however, i haven't really seen any evidence that 651 had damaged a wall when removed... though i haven't used it long-term on any indoor surfaces.

Looking for this type of picture frame.

check these out. i saw them a few days ago on the site. it looks very close to what you're looking for only in a hanging version with the light illuminating from the top. i'm thinking about picking one or two up myself. if they're out, i'm sure they'd sell. http://www.uscutter.com/LED-Lighted-Signholder-Assorted-Colors_p_1158.html

    POOR QUALITY (EVEN WORSE SUPPORT)

you shouldn't be banned because you had poor service becuase of seemingly poor quality products. you should be banned because you're an ass. if you would grow up and stop with the 5-year-old name calling, maybe you'd get somewhere. otherwise, if i were bannerjohn, i'd enjoy every one of those 200+ bans. the honey and vinegar saying comes to mind. edit: i just saw the other username you made. forget what i said about growing up. go crawl back under your rock.

    I REALLY NEED HELP

not to say that this will solve your problems, but you should really think about ditching the USB and using the serial cable. i had all sorts of small annoying glitches with the usb cable before the mob of users on here convinced me to switch. once i started using the serial cable, i have had ZERO problems of any kind. perfect connection and cuts every time. it may not be the problem you're facing, but it'll certainly help and eliminate the possibilities.
